Our poll reveals a strong reaction among Mexicans to the ‘Tequila de la Muerte’ health alert. The leading response, from 34.8% of respondents, was “Me preocupa y evitaré ciertos tequilas.” (It worries me and I will avoid certain tequilas.). This indicates a significant level of personal concern and a proactive stance towards prevention.

Closely following, 31.5% of respondents stated “Es importante que las autoridades investiguen a fondo.” (It is important that the authorities investigate thoroughly.), highlighting a desire for official action and accountability. Together, these two responses represent a substantial majority of the public who are either personally affected or demand official intervention.

Another 17.5% admitted “No estoy al tanto de esta noticia.” (I am not aware of this news.), suggesting a segment of the population might still be uninformed about the alert. Meanwhile, 8.6% were unaffected, stating “No me afecta, no bebo tequila.” (It doesn’t affect me, I don’t drink tequila.), and 7.6% considered it an exaggeration, believing “Es una exageración, no creo que sea tan grave.” (It’s an exaggeration, I don’t think it’s that serious.).

Among women, the top concern was for official action, with 37.2% of female respondents stating “Es importante que las autoridades investiguen a fondo.” In contrast, men were more inclined to personal avoidance, with 35.0% of male respondents choosing “Me preocupa y evitaré ciertos tequilas.”

Age also played a role in public opinion. Younger adults, specifically those aged 18-24 (38.5%) and 25-34 (43.4%), predominantly expressed concern and a willingness to avoid certain tequilas. The 45-54 age group also leaned this way at 29.8%. However, the 35-44 age group’s top response, at 31.5%, was the call for authorities to investigate thoroughly, aligning more with the overall sentiment among women.
